Product Description

Our switch adapted laser allows an individual to turn the laser on and off independently.  Press the switch one time, and the laser turns on. Press the switch again, and the laser turns off.

Note: Switch is not included with laser, must be purchased separately. This laser will not turn on without a switch.

Switches can be purchased at stores like AbleNet.

Amy Roman, SLP, has put together a list and a video showing different switches that may be helpful to a person with ALS.

A head mounted laser pointer can be an extremely powerful communication tool. Lasers can enable a person with limited movement to directly point to letters, words and phrases on a communication board.

Laser pointers are simple and easy to use, but they can provide an EXTREMELY fast and efficient way to communicate. Even some people with extremely limited head movement may be able to use a head mounted laser.
Check out the "Product Videos" (on the tab above), to get a sense of how efficient communicating with a laser pointer can be.

  • Fast and Efficient Communication
  • Easy to Set Up

Our laser uses a Class II laser module (the lowest powered visible laser available).
A Class II laser is considered safe because the blink reflex will limit the exposure to no more than 0.25 seconds. (Most conventional presentation lasers are Class IIIa, and can be roughly 5 times more powerful than a Class II laser.) More on laser safety

Adjustable Angle:.

The laser is mounted onto a tiny adjustable arm. This makes it easy to adjust the beam of the laser up, down, left and right.

This is important, because a person may be communicating in several different positions though out the course of the day. (If a person was using a conventional laser pointer, and tilted back in their chair, the laser beam would point at the ceiling.)

Using an adjustable mount also means that the communication partner does not need to change the position of the board every time the laser user reclines or tilts back in their chair.

Lightweight & Comfortable:

The laser module and arm have a combined weight of less than 1/4 of an ounce. This is important, because putting too much weight on a person’s glasses can cause discomfort, and may lead to skin breakdown on the nose.

Easy to Attach:

The laser easily mounts onto most eyeglasses. If an individual doesn't wear glasses, it is possible to attach the laser to a pair of inexpensive sunglasses, with the lenses popped out. The laser can also be clipped to a barrette, or mounted to the brim of a baseball cap.

External AA Batteries:

Our laser uses 2 AA batteries, housed in an external battery box. This has a number of advantages over using a conventional presentation laser pointer (the kind purchased at an office supply store). AA batteries are easy to find, and inexpensive to buy in bulk. Rechargeable batteries can be also be used.

Why use an adapted laser?

Why not just use an off-the-shelf commercial laser for communication? Why use an adapted laser?
The Head Mounted Lasers are handmade at our offices in Oakland, CA.

Note: Laser pointers are not returnable.  (This is because used lasers cannot be re-sold).

If you are not sure whether or not the laser pointer is right for you:
1. Please contact us by phone or email. We can help determine if a laser pointer is appropriate for a particular individual.
2. Another option is to rent a laser to try it out.

Lasers come with a 6 month warranty.
