LOW TECH SOLUTIONS LASERS COMPARISON CHART

    GENERAL FEATURES

    Simple & Intuitive:
The individual uses head movements to point the red laser dot to a letter, word or symbol on a paper communication board.   The communication partner then says the item out loud.

Check out the Product Videos (on the tab above), to get a sense of how simple and quick communication with the laser can be.

     Faster Communication:
A laser can allow a person to point to a larger communication board with many more 'targets' than they might be able physically access on a high tech device.  This allows some people to use a core vocabulary system.  Core vocabulary words are the most frequently used words in the English language (words like 'the', 'and', 'he', 'she', 'how'.)  Using core vocabulary can significantly speed up communication.

    Safe:
Our laser uses a Class II laser module (the lowest powered visible laser available).  A Class II laser is considered safe for normal operation. More on laser safety.

    Physically Easy to Use:
A laser goes exactly where you point it.  It always travels in a straight line.  Unlike a head mouse or an eye gaze system, the user never needs to "re-calibrate" the laser. The distance between the laser and the board can also significantly magnify head movement.  (The farther away the board, the less the person has to move their head.)

    Adjustable Angle:

The laser is on a small adjustable arm.  Throughout the day, when the person using the laser changes the position (for example, reclining in a power chair), the angle of the laser pointer can be adjusted up, down, left and right.
    adjustable-angle.jpg

    Lightweight & Comfortable
The portion of the device which clips onto a pair of eyeglasses weighs 1/4 of an oz, making it lightweight and comfortable to wear.

    Standard Laser or Switch Adapted:

    Standard Laser:

The communication partner can turn the laser on and off, using the
small switch on the battery box.

(This is designed to be turned on and off by the communication
partner, not the person with the disability.)

    on-off-switch-standard-laser.jpg

    Switch Adapted Laser:

This allows the person with the disability to independently turn the laser on and
off using an ability switch. (The laser does not come with a switch.)
A switch is required to turn the laser on and off.

AbleNet and Enabling Devices offer a wide variety of switches.

    *  The Continuous Battery Burn Time (CBBT) refers to the continuous length of time the batteries will power the laser, before they need to be replaced.

*** Tested using DuraCell ProCell AA Batteries.

Nothing else like this on the market

Posted by kristine copley on Sep 22 2020

I help craft communication solutions for people affected by ALS and this adjustable glasses-mounted laser, combined with one of LTS's posters, is a common, super-simple effective strategy for many. The zig-zag clip holds the laser on firmly, and the rotating ball allows for lots of flexibility for resting laser placement. I've bought dozens of these. Truly a useful communication tool.

We are creating speech tool kits for the Care Services Team at the ALS Assoc Greater Chicago Chapter. This product will make a great addition to our kit. Margaret was extremely knowledgeable about her products and had excellent recommendations based on our needs.

Posted by Chau Ngyuen on Apr 17 2019

I got this laser for my husband who has ALS. He has a talking communication device, but he wasn't using it... it was very slow and cumbersome for him. He has gotten very fast using the laser and his AlphaCore board. Very grateful

      A miraculous product!!

Posted by Frances Verderosa on Nov 15 2017

In March of 2017 my husband suffered a catastrophic brain stem stroke that left him unable to communicate verbally or move any part of his body voluntarily. At the young age of 40, my husband found himself trapped in his body with a fully functioning mind. Due to an extraordinary Occupational Therapist at Rusk Institute, my husband was introduced to this low tech laser. It was life changing during his darkest times. This laser allowed my husband to use his newly aquired motor skills in his head and neck to point to letters and words on a letter board and speak his mind. He began expressing his thoughts, needs, and concerns. It opened up communication between his therapy team, doctors, family and most importantly his children! Thank you Low Tech Solutions. You gave my husband a voice again!!

Posted by Liz Neumann on Aug 6 2017

my son needed this quickly (ALS). his glasses are broken, so we attached it to a visor. attaching it to a headband (plastic, ear to ear) works the best. he has become a chatty kathy. he even uses the light to shine on his laptop so we can help him use mail, facebook, twitter. it's been a god send. also, margaret cotts got it into the mail immediately, and has been very helpful.

      Patient is Happy!

Posted by Cathey Priddy for The ALS Service Organization on Jul 4 2017

Hi, Margaret, I came to the computer to write you a thank you for your excellent products and service. Right down to the packaging, you and your business are just top notch. We delivered the communication board and laser light to the PALS yesterday. This man had been struggling for over a year with a Tobii and eye gaze. After major efforts and major frustration, the products from you folks put the biggest smile on his face. It was immediate. He was able to use it with us within a minute of getting set up. He could not thank us enough. We cannot thank you enough.

      Our Favorite Adapted Laser Pointer

Posted by Amy Roman, ccc-SLP, Forbes Norris ALS Center on Jan 17 2017

Low tech solutions laser pointers remain the best for many reasons. They utilize a ball joint so they can be easily adjusted for people who frequently change position. The "switch adopted" laser pointer enable a person to turn their own laser on are when they are ready with something to say and turn it off when they are finished. . The LowTech Solutions laser has a toggle built-in, so the laser remains on till tapped a second time. Others required as an external latching switch accessory. Finally the price is good. We purchase them frequently at our augmentative communication and assistive technology Lending Library and they are very reliable. Shipping is prompt
